The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

The first session started on June 10, 1964 at 7:00 pm and lasted until 11:40 pm. After a break of an hour the group continued at 12:40 am and ended at 3:00 am on June 11th.

Puppet On A String (takes 3-11)

The first two takes are short false starts and are missing on the original tape in Sony's vaults. So we start after the first few bars of take number 3. The ballad doesn't appear to challenge anybody, the greatest fault here is Elvis getting out of tune for a second or two. After the performance the producer can be heared saying "Take a listen". The next try is killed off by the king after half a minute, when he tries again he has to laugh because someone looked at him with a sheepish grin. When he tries again, Elvis doesn't get the key change right and lets out a frustrated "damn!". Finally the group manages to produce another complete performance, but the lead vocalist sounds reluctant at times and messes up the timing here and there. During the intro of take 8 the producer says "I'm sorry, one more for me, guys". Now everything seems to work well, but after 1.5 minutes Elvis sings the word "will" in the wrong key and curses "goddamn, missed it!". However, the following two takes are complete performances with the last one becoming the master. The takes 5, 6, 7 and 10 were previously released on FTD's collector's edition of "Girl Happy", take 10 can also be found on BMG's boxed set "Today, Tomorrow And Forever".

The Meanest Girl In Town (takes 1-13)

Here FTD used take 9 on their compilation album "Out In Hollywood". Later it was released again on their collector's edition of "Girl Happy", which also contains take 11. The first take lasts for a minute and can be described as complete mess. Elvis has trouble to sing the many words to the fast melody. At times he mumbles something, on one occasion he simply makes something up. It's quite funny. Take two lasts for twenty seconds, before Elvis gets lost in the words. The next try fails right at the intro, take 4 appears to work well, but then the king misses his cue and everything falls apart after 45 seconds. The same thing happens during take 5. With the next try everything finally comes together and the group manages to tape a complete version of "The Meanest Girl In Town". And speaking about the finale: Nobody seems to know when or how to end the song. The next attempt ends after a minute and 14 seconds. Elvis gets winded and ends the song by saying "speaking of a deep breath". Take 8 is over after not even 30 seconds, but number 9 turns into a complete performance. The 10th take is killed off after a few bars because the tempo gets too slow. With the next try another complete rendition is archived and it already sounds pretty good. After another long false start Elvis and his crew finally get a releasable performance on tape and can move on to the title song of the movie.

Girl Happy (takes 1-13 + workpart-takes 1-5 + master)

After a messed up intro the group starts again and performs the song for 1.5 minutes. Compared to the master this (abandoned) rendition is very slow, but certainly not unpleasant. The second take is killed off after 45 seconds, number 3 is an almost complete performance. Right before the end Elvis sings "I've been this way" instead of "I've been like this" and cancels the take. Take 4 is played a tad faster, which is just the right tempo. At the end one of The Jordanaires makes a mistake and sings "...can't you see" after "Girl Happy". But apart from that glitch it's a very good performance. After two short false starts Elvis wants to increase the tempo. Since The Jordanaires are not in sync the attempt is ended after not even a minute. But the group agrees to stay with the higher tempo. Take 8 is almost complete, but there are several timing issues. Finally an angry sounding Elvis kills it off. The 9th take is nothing more than a few bars of the intro, number 10 ends after 45 seconds. Now everything seems to work well, but then the king gets lost in the lyrics and so everything falls apart shortly before the two minute mark. Take 11 crashes right before the end. The Jordanaires correctly repeat "Girl Happy...can't you see" to give the engineer time to fade out, but suddenly Elvis starts to sing again. As a result he gets audibly angry at himself, but soon jokingly asks "Who invented this? I beat the hell out of him". The producer quips "Hell Wallis" (as a corruption of the movie producer Hal Wallis, with whom Elvis was working since 1957). With the next take it doesn't get better, somehow the king cannot get the ending right. As a result he produces five workpart-takes of the ending. The master, which ends the "Girl Happy Session" is a splice of take 13 and the workpart-take 4.
